Pixstat picture files

Pixstat can load and save the following files formats:

• BMP (uncompressed bitmap files)
• GIF (maximum 256 colours or grey tones, lossless compression)
• JPEG, JPG (compressed pictures, with more of less losses according to compression factor)
• PNG (lossless compressed format)
• TIF, TIFF (can be compressed or not, if compressed lossy or lossless)

We generally recommand to use formats with lossless compression in conjuction with Pixstat, especially for saving in grey tones or in black and white. PNG is always a good choice. JPEG is good for normal pictures taken with a camera because it allows a fast compression and decompression and it can include metadata. For the kind of analysis done with Pixstat, however, the losses of the JPEG compression, especially running colours, are a clear disadvantage.
